The Power of Professional Engineering License for Job Security

How can you make your career bullet-proof? Can you make yourself indispensable in the job market? Instead of chasing jobs, is it possible to make jobs chase you?

The answer to these questions lies in a simple economic principle. The Supply-Demand curve. So let’s quickly revisit this simple but powerful fundamental concept.

Typically, the human mind starts thinking about job security when times are tough – Does that sound familiar? In times when the economy starts contracting, the demand for new recruits decline. This puts downward pressure on the salaries of employed workers. If things get worse, even the currently employed individuals start getting worried too.

This supply and demand curve works both ways though. If the employee possesses difficult-to-replace skills and credentials then the demand curve for that employee should remain stable. That’s because the employer recognizes the value that such an employee brings to the table.

This brings us to another fundamental concept that governs the market-place. Job security is largely linked to the value being brought to the table. Although we should be striving to upgrade our skill set, knowledge base, and credentials regularly, it gets particularly important during downturns.

One such credential is a Professional Engineering license. In order to obtain a P.E. license, you have to meet a wide range of criteria which include education from accredited colleges, experience, references, and two multi-hour technical exams. But it’s these exact requirements that make this credential so valuable. Had it been easy, every engineering graduate would have it. Right?

P.E. license places you in an exclusive group of engineers that have met strict requirements outlined by state engineering boards. It grants you the privilege of sealing and stamping engineering designs that can be implemented – non-licensed engineers don’t have these privileges. Consequently, P.E.s also command higher salaries, job security, and career mobility among other benefits.

Are you an Electrical Engineer planning to become a P.E.?

Getting a PE license requires you to pass 2 exams.

FE Electrical and Computer – 3 Common Reasons Why Students Procrastinate In Taking This Exam

Preparing for the FE Electrical and Computer Exam is no easy task. Consistently putting in the hours of studying and practice every day can feel grueling at times. Naturally, students tend to have certain reasons as to why they procrastinate in taking this exam. In this blog, we address 3 common reasons for procrastination that we’ve seen teaching 100s of students to help elucidate this matter.

Reason # 1 – “It’s been a while since I graduated”

This is probably the most common one. It’s true – FE and PE exams are much easier if you take them as soon as possible after graduation. As much as Study For FE recommends taking the exam as early as possible (ideally before you graduate), sometimes that is no longer an option. Many students have years of experience in the workforce and feel as though they’ve forgotten most of their undergraduate curriculum.

However, regardless of how long it’s been since you graduated, passing the FE Exam will always be possible. Study For FE has guided students with 5, 10, even 20+ years of workforce experience to success on the FE Exam. A large number of students prepare for FE Electrical and Computer exam while working full-time. We have incredibly effective, convenient, and well-structured exam preparation resources to help you not only brush up on all the topics, but also practice numerous questions and consolidate what you’ve learned.

Reason # 2 – “I don’t perform well on timed exams”

The FE Electrical and Computer Exam is a 5 hours and 20 minute long high-pressure game and a candidate needs to know how to efficiently manage their time to succeed. Luckily, there are many ways to improve your time management skills and better prepare yourself for the test-taking environment. “Practice makes Perfect” is a well-known saying that is passed down generation after generation. Aside from spending more time learning the content and practicing more questions, you can utilize a number of other excellent time management tips.

Reason # 3 – “I don’t have enough time to study”

Deciding how much time to allocate for the FE Electrical and Computer Exam is perhaps one of the biggest decisions you need to make for the exam. The average candidate studies for 2 – 3 months putting in a total of ~300 hours. This amounts to around 3-4 hours a day assuming you take a day off for rest every week. However, this is just a guideline and every candidate is different.

Another big decision which affects how much time you’ll have to study is the resources you choose. Many students are tempted to scour through YouTube for relevant clips that’ll help them understand the concepts. However, quality content on YouTube is scarce and searching for it can often be unreasonably time consuming. Using the high quality resources can immensely alleviate exam preparation stress and streamline the whole process. Study for FE’s exam preparation resources include Study Guides, Practice Exams and On-demand course with in-depth lectures, quiz bank, computer-simulated practice exams that can help you prepare for the real exam. These resources are well-structured, streamlined, and concise to help you effectively handle everything the exam throws at you on test day.

3 FE Electrical Exam Preparation Tips That You May Have Overlooked

There’s no doubt that the FE Electrical and Computer exam preparation and the exam itself is a race against time. With 110 questions to solve in just 5 hours and 20 minutes, a candidate must know how to efficiently manage their time to succeed. But how can you manage your time better?

Although doing more content revision and practice questions should be the core of your preparation, they’re not the only things you can do. Many students overlook the preparation tips that go beyond simply learning the content. Here, we’ve gathered 3 such tips through teaching 100s of students that can help you optimize your performance for excellent time management during the exam.

Tip # 1 – Know your calculator inside-out

Regardless of whether you’ve picked the TI-36X-Pro, Cassio/HP, or any other eligible calculator (see the link at the end for reference), you should thoroughly practice all relevant functions and know your way around it. It’s essential that you know how to get between the different modes quickly and efficiently to save yourself time.

Ideally, you should stick with the same one throughout your entire preparation period so that you understand the ins and outs of your calculator.

Spend at least 30 – 45 minutes learning the basic functions of the calculator. We recommend Casio FX 115 because it is affordable and simple to use. A lot of students also use TI-36X Pro. Some of the most important functions that I can think of right away are rectangular – polar conversion, matrix, binary-decimal-hex-octal conversions.

Tip # 2 – Don’t underestimate the importance NCEES® FE Reference Handbook

NCEES® FE Reference Handbook will be the only reference material allowed during the exam. It will be visible to the left of your computer screen for reference. You should spend some time going through all sections of the reference handbook to achieve a good grasp of where the relevant information is located.

In the FE Exam, every minute counts. And you’ll certainly thank yourself if you can save a few minutes by knowing exactly where to find what you’re looking for during the real exam.

Tip # 3 – Become comfortable with computer-based testing format

Let’s face it. Exams are a high-pressure game and can be quite stressful even for the most prepared candidates. With 110 timed questions covering practically the entire undergraduate engineering curriculum, there’s certainly going to be some that will surprise you. Although getting surprised is inevitable, one thing you can do to mitigate the stress is to familiarize yourself with the test-taking format so that it doesn’t feel novel and alien to you on test day.

Although computer-based tests are becoming more and more common, the fact remains that most of us are still much more comfortable with the old school pencil and paper type testing especially if that’s how you took the exams during your academic career.

Study for FE’s computer-simulated practice exam, in-depth lectures, quiz bank and Study Guides are a great resource to help you prepare for the real exam. These resources are well-structured, streamlined and concise to help you tackle the problems effectively on your exam day.

4 biggest challenges in FE Electrical and Computer exam preparation

Part of doing your home-work before starting a new project involves identifying the biggest challenges that are involved – Isn’t it?

Well, FE Electrical and Computer exam is indeed a project and here’s a list of the 4 biggest challenges encountered by students in their journey of FE Electrical and Computer exam preparation based on my personal experience and interactions with students over the last few years.

Challenge # 1 – Lack of motivation

FE exam is one of the two exams that are required for obtaining PE license (other one being the PE exam). Both of these exams take considerable investment of time, effort and money. For entry level jobs and even some intermediate/senior positions, PE license is not required. In fact, there are many engineers who choose not to pursue PE license at all and spend their entire career without having one.

Actionable ideas to overcome this challenge

  • A lot of employers within the power systems engineering industry are now starting to list E.I.T registration (obtained after passing FE exam) as a job requirement even for entry level positions.
  • If you want to have an edge over competition in a tough job market then don’t procrastinate in taking your FE exam.
  • Checkout the following job postings….

Challenge # 2 – Exam preparation resources

Your choice of exam preparation resources is not a simple cost-evaluation exercise. That’s because in addition to the investing money you’ll also be investing time over the next 3 – 4 months while using these resources. In fact, for most of the students, the greater cost involved in this process is that of their time. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you are choosing the right exam preparation resources that can help you streamline your efforts and yield maximum output for your input.

Actionable ideas to overcome this challenge

  • Sign-up for this FREE 1-hour webinar to learn about the 3-step framework for FE Electrical & Computer exam preparation.
  • I will go over the latest exam specification and discuss how you can get into the right mindset along with other tips & tricks.
  • 4-month exam preparation schedule will be reviewed.
  • Free FE Electrical and Computer exam preparation planner will be provided.
  • I will also introduce resources to kick-start your FE Electrical and Computer exam preparation.

Challenge # 3 – Busy schedules

Typically, engineers take the FE exam after being out of school for 3-4 years. It is generally at this point in their careers (for some it’s even later) that they start seeing real value in PE license. Most of them are already working full-time which means that FE exam preparation has to be carried on after a full working day or over the weekends. To top it off, they also tend to have additional demands on their time in the form of other personal and social commitments. This makes FE exam preparation very difficult because it takes at least 3 – 4 months to properly prepare for this exam which is a considerable amount of time commitment.

Actionable ideas to overcome this challenge

  • Start managing your time effectively by developing a strict study routine and follow it rigorously until it becomes a habit.
  • Talk to your family and friends about your goal of passing the FE exam and what it means for your career.
  • An often overlooked component of time management is ‘focused effort’. You’d be surprised to see the significant improvement in productivity that comes with ‘focused effort’ when compared with ‘distracted half hearted effort’. In fact, with focused effort you might even be able to reduce your study time by as much as 20 – 50% which can give you extra time to carry on your regular routines.

Challenge # 4 – Broad range of exam topics

It is true that the 17 sections that are covered by FE Electrical and Computer exam specification encompasses almost the entire 4 years of undergraduate coursework for Electrical and Computer Engineering which can be very overwhelming. Students also fear that as they progress along with the exam topics they might actually start forgetting the concepts from earlier sections. Moreover, some students have not even taken coursework for all 17 sections in their undergraduate because courses such as Controls, Computer Networks, Computer Systems and Software Engineering are considered ‘technical electives’ in some schools and students specializing in power system engineering generally don’t take these courses (at least not all of them).

Actionable ideas to overcome this challenge

  • Break down the entire exam specification into min-milestones and prepare for each section as a min-exam within a larger exam.
  • Make sure to allocate time/effort to each section proportional to its exam weight-age. For example, Math, Circuits, Electronics, Power Systems and Digital Systems are the 5 most heavily weighted exam topics. It is important to give them due attention and invest sufficient time and effort.
  • Make sure to grab the low-hanging fruits i.e. Math, Engineering Economics, Ethics, Probability & Statistics and Properties of Electrical Materials.
  • Remember that everyone has areas of strengths and weaknesses. Some sections will be outright boring for you but it’s important to know that you are not trying to have fun at the moment but working hard towards your goal.

FE Electrical and Computer Exam-5 Common reasons for Failure

Failure is without doubt a bitter pill to swallow. Ideally we all want to cruise through life from one success to another success. However, sometimes failures are encountered and they need to be dealt with appropriately. Probably the worst response to failure is quitting on your dream because once you stop pursuing your dream that’s when you truly fail.

1 – Underestimating the challenge

There’s no doubt about the fact that the FE Electrical and Computer exam is challenging. You are tested quite literally on all 4 years of ECE undergraduate coursework. The exam tests you on 17 sections including Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Ethics and Professional Practice, Engineering Economics, Properties of Electrical Materials, Circuit Analysis, Linear Systems, Signal Processing, Electronics, Power Systems, Electromagnetics, Control Systems, Communications, Computer Networks, Digital Systems, Computer Systems and Software Engineering.

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is not a walk in the park for most students. It is even more challenging if you are not a recent graduate. Based on the latest stats provided by NCEES, failure rate among first time exam takers who graduated within 12-24 months is 23% and that for repeat takers is as high as 35%.

2 – Procrastination

Time management for FE Electrical and Computer Exam preparation can be difficult. There are 17 exam sections to prepare and these individual sections don’t necessarily complement each other. For instance, Digital Systems will have little to no overlap with Signal Processing similarly Circuit Analysis will have little to no overlap with Electromagnetic. This is mainly because of the nature of Electrical Engineering which is by far the most diverse field. As you progress through your exam preparation you will actually be climbing lots of small mountains (each topic is a new challenge) rather than climbing one big mountain.

But the bigger challenge is ‘procrastination’. A lot of students keep putting this exam off again and again. The truth is that the more you delay it, the harder it gets. In addition to the obvious reason i.e. being out of school for a long period of time, personal commitments and job responsibilities also come into the way. So if you ever plan on becoming a PE then don’t delay this exam – start preparing now!

3 – Exam Preparation Resources

Arguably the most precious investment that you make in preparing for FE Electrical and Computer exam is that of your time. A vast majority of candidates preparing for this exam also work full-time and many of them also have other commitments that demand their time and attention. Therefore, it is crucial to use effective exam preparation resources otherwise you’d not only be wasting your money but also your time. Effective exam preparation resource is one that helps you become exam ready in the least amount of time and does not overwhelm you with irrelevant details.

4 – Exam Preparation Strategy

FE Electrical and Computer exam result is binary Pass or Fail. You don’t receive any grades on your performance. Some students study very hard but not necessarily smart. In many ways, trying to ace this exam can be counterproductive because it will take a lot of your time and require intense effort which can impact other areas of your personal and professional life. In order to pass comfortably, you need to study hard and smart.

For example, rather than suggesting whether to focus on their strengths or weaknesses, I recommend students to first focus on the top 5 sections that carry the highest weight i.e. Mathematics, Circuit Analysis, Electronics, Power Systems and Digital Systems.

Similarly, the first 5 sections of FE Electrical and Computer exam are relatively easy and account for roughly 25% of the exam weightage. Students should aim to score A+ in these sections i.e. Math, Probability & Statistics, Engineering Economics, Ethics and Properties of Electrical Materials.

Last but not the least, even if you get bored by some sections or find them challenging, try not to skip them all together because that will guarantee a 0 or very low score in those sections and sabotage your chances of passing the exam.

5 – Fear of failure

Fear of failure is one of the reasons why students procrastinate in the first place. Even after mustering up the courage to prepare for the exam for several months, some of them never feel 100% ready for it. They go into the exam without confidence and lose composure quickly during the exam. If that sounds familiar to you then remember that it’s not uncommon and there are some tips and tricks that can help you.

First of all, it is very improbable for someone to ever feel 100% ready for such an exam because of the range of topics and variety of ways in which one can get tested. So if you are not feeling 100% ready even after doing everything you possibly could, then don’t worry because a lot of other hardworking and diligent candidates are in the same boat.

Secondly, it is better to reschedule the exam and take it when you have confidence in your own self rather than walking into the exam room telling yourself that you are not ready. As Napoleon said, “He who fears being conquered is sure of defeat.”

Finally, remember that in the grand scheme of things even if you fail the exam it won’t be a big deal. You can always retake it so don’t compromise your performance by imagining and reimagining failure continuously. Go into the exam room with full confidence after preparing as best as you can to give it your best shot and maintain your composure while facing tough questions.
