There’s no doubt that the FE Electrical and Computer exam
preparation and the exam itself is a race against time. With 110 questions to
solve in just 5 hours and 20 minutes, a candidate must know how to efficiently
manage their time to succeed. But how can you manage your time better?
Although doing more content revision and practice questions should be the core of your preparation, they’re not the only things you can do. Many students overlook the preparation tips that go beyond simply learning the content. Here, we’ve gathered 3 such tips through teaching 100s of students that can help you optimize your performance for excellent time management during the exam.
Tip # 1 – Know your calculator inside-out
Regardless of whether you’ve picked the TI-36X-Pro, Cassio/HP, or any other eligible calculator (see the link at the end for reference), you should thoroughly practice all relevant functions and know your way around it. It’s essential that you know how to get between the different modes quickly and efficiently to save yourself time.
Ideally, you should stick with the same one throughout your entire preparation period so that you understand the ins and outs of your calculator.
Spend at least 30 – 45 minutes learning the basic functions of the calculator. We recommend Casio FX 115 because it is affordable and simple to use. A lot of students also use TI-36X Pro. Some of the most important functions that I can think of right away are rectangular – polar conversion, matrix, binary-decimal-hex-octal conversions.
Tip # 2 – Don’t underestimate the importance NCEES® FE Reference Handbook
NCEES® FE Reference Handbook will be the only reference material allowed during the exam. It will be visible to the left of your computer screen for reference. You should spend some time going through all sections of the reference handbook to achieve a good grasp of where the relevant information is located.
In the FE Exam, every minute counts. And you’ll certainly thank yourself if you can save a few minutes by knowing exactly where to find what you’re looking for during the real exam.
Tip # 3 – Become comfortable with computer-based testing format
Let’s face it. Exams are a
high-pressure game and can be quite stressful even for the most prepared
candidates. With 110 timed questions covering practically the entire
undergraduate engineering curriculum, there’s certainly going to be some that
will surprise you. Although getting surprised is inevitable, one thing you can
do to mitigate the stress is to familiarize yourself with the test-taking
format so that it doesn’t feel novel and alien to you on test day.
Although computer-based tests are becoming more and more common, the fact remains that most of us are still much more comfortable with the old school pencil and paper type testing especially if that’s how you took the exams during your academic career.
Study for FE’s computer-simulated practice exam, in-depth lectures, quiz bank and Study Guides are a great resource to help you prepare for the real exam. These resources are well-structured, streamlined and concise to help you tackle the problems effectively on your exam day.
